Keri Daway #42

What's the story behind your derby name?
My derby name turned out to be even more appropriate than I expected. I was super excited when I first signed up for roller derby, but I never really expected how much it would take over my life. Now I can't imagine being off-skates because I'm having so much fun. I really have gotten Keri Daway!!

What's the story behind your derby number?
As any Douglas Adams fan can tell you, 42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everything. And that's what roller derby is for me, so it's the perfect number.

When did you join Renegade Derby Dames?
Spring 2011 (Founder)

Had you ever played roller derby before joining RDD?
I started out in roller derby at South Simcoe Rebel Rollers, and then skated with the DVAS at Toronto Roller Derby for a short time before devoting myself to RDD.

What (if any) skating experience did you have before joining RDD?
I've been on quad skates since at least the age of 4. I grew up as a bonafide rink-rat in the late 70s - early 80s, spending all my spare time trying to master artistic skating. But sometime in my late teens, as roller rinks started losing popularity, I ended up hanging up my skates. It took me over two decades to pick them up again, and I can't imagine putting them back down now.

Why did you join?
As soon as I saw Whip It and found out there was roller derby locally, I knew I had to do it. There just wasn't a choice for me.

What's the best thing about being a derby girl?
Being a derby girl means being able to be fierce, confident, athletic, strong, defiant, and fabulous, and you get to do it on wheels. What could be better?

What do you do in your non-derby life?
I'm a software tester as my day job. I'm basically a geek. In the copious amounts of spare time I have after derby (ROFL), I like to read, play video games, and watch more derby.

What is your most memorable derby moment?
Being selected to play for Team Tush in Montreal. It was an honour to play with and be mentored by skaters from Team Canada and the New Skids. I learned so much, and I was proud to represent RDD with Monster Muffin.

What is your derby goal/dream?
I'm committed to seeing RDD make it to Divisional Playoffs.

Who is your favourite skater/derby idol?
There are too many!! If I had to pick one, it would be Suzy Hotrod, my first derby crush. Not just for her mind boggling skills on the track, but also her incredible attitude. Her love of derby is infectious, and she never, ever gives up.
