Dewey Decimate Her #25
Name: Dewey Decimate Her
Number: 25
Age: 33
Hometown: Newmarket
What’s the story behind your derby name/derby number? I work in a school library and a wanted a nerdy librarian name that reflected my intense respect for the Dewey decimal system. The quiet bookworm by day/ fierce derby girl by night dichotomy makes people laugh and I wanted something fun.
As for my number, 25 has been my lucky number for as long as I can remember. When I met my partner, I was surprised to discover that 25 was his lucky/jersey number since childhood too! It was meant to be <3
When did you join Roller Derby/Renegade Derby Dames? Why? I joined RDD in Fall 2016. I was a newish member of another (farther away) league when I met an RDD skater at work who informed me that there was wonderful a league WAY closer to home.
What’s the best thing about roller derby? My preconceived TV ideas about derby girls were shattered by the diversity of our group. Strong, supportive women come from all walks of life, and the best thing about derby is bonds we have formed.
Why do you keep playing? After all these years I believe I have found my sport! I love the way I feel playing derby.
What is your derby goal/dream? I have discovered in derby a love of speed, and get a thrill out of improving my lap times. I would like for my mind to catch up with my body and to be the player who can think a few steps ahead and always be in the right place.
Favourite derby moment? There were three this year, but they are all moments in which a skill finally ‘clicks’ after a teammate recommends a minor adjustment. Figuring out the tomahawk stop, lean (when doing laps) and learning to come into the pack strong were huge moments for me.
