What’s the story behind your derby name/number? KaySlay became my login handle when I started CrossFit in 2010 and I stuck with it because Kay didn’t come to play, she came to slay! My birthday is August 24 so I chose my birth month and day to be my derby number. I love the number 8 and it’s all multiples of 8.

When did you join Renegade Derby Dames? I started roller derby in the fall of 2018 and joined RDD in January 2020, a year after I started playing. I connected with RDD on and off the track at Fresh and Furious and the WFTDA World Championships, both in 2019. My sweetheart lives in Alliston which really sweetens the deal!

What’s the best thing about roller derby? The best thing about roller derby is the support and love. You can be anyone you choose to be and you are embraced for it, never judged or shamed. I also love the challenge. Roller derby is probably the most difficult sport I have ever learned to play!

Why do you keep playing? I keep playing derby because I am addicted to learning something every single practice or game and it feels good when you realize you actually know what is going on when you’re on the track!

What is your derby goal/dream? My derby goal/dream is to continue to play without injury! This means I need to sharpen my reflexes and be more cat-like to avoid big hits and falls.

Favourite derby moment? My favourite derby moment was my very first scrimmage. I will never forget how nervous I was but I still did it!
